OPERATION COBRA
Six weeks after D-Day, the Allies were still entangled in the Normandy hedgerow country. Then, the American VII Corps mounted Operation Cobra. When General Bradley outlined his plan for Cobra at a meeting with his Corps Commanders, he called for aggressive action and that severe losses might have to be born, However “ if the they get set again, we shall go right back to this hedge fighting and you can’t make any speed. This thing must be bold!”

The Breakout of Normandy
A WWII Reenactment at Smith Barracks, Baumholder Germany
16-19 April 2009.
After the success of the last event, we will attempt to make it bigger and better. We have added a full day to the event. Participants may begin arriving as early as 1200 on 16 April.
The event will be scenario-driven and will allow for the flexibility and initiative of unit commanders on the battlefield.
There will be a public display established at the PX on 17 April from 1000-1500. While not all participants are required to be there, the plan is for several reenactors in uniform with weapons and equipment typically used by soldiers on both sides in that summer of 1944. We will use this part of the event to provide the public a chance to see and learn of the equipment on both sides. It will also call attention to our event.
We are awaiting permission to use the Training Village and surrounding forest for our event. If we do not receive this permission, the plan will be to occupy and use MP Field and the surrounding woodline, also a good area.
US Forces will consist of 1st ID, 2nd ID 30th ID, 90th ID, 2nd AD, 3rd AD.
We are fully read up on the fighting in Normandy during the summer of 1944. We know there were certain units there that we cannot and will not portray. No, we are not rewriting history, but here goes
NO WAFFEN SS, NO ALLGEMEINE SS, NO HJ
NO PLAIN TREE 3/4, ERBSENTARN, ETC, ETC, ETC..
WE WILL GET SHUT DOWN AND NEVER BE ALLOWED BACK ON SMITH BARRACKS.
We would also like to have a few Civilian reenactors to populate the village. Many of the local people did not flee the area, either because they were too scared or had no place to go. The initial breakthrough was very fast!
There is still much work being done, but we wanted to get the information out, since this event is 3 months away. As before updates will be sent to registered participants.
