Antwort vom RAF Museum:
Thank you for your enquiry which was received on 1st June 2009. You wished to receive information relating to Swiss personnel serving with the RAF during the Second World War. I have been unable to find any references to Swiss nationals serving with the RAF (although of course this is not conclusive proof that it did not happen) but there were certainly no Swiss squadrons.
With regard to the shoulder title, shoulder titles were worn for one of two reasons: either to show the nationality of the individual or to show that the individual was a returning ex-patriot. To more fully explain this latter point, and taking Switzerland as an example, if a British national were to move to Switzerland before the war, but then return to the UK to fight, then they would be entitled to wear “Switzerland” shoulder titles. Unfortunately there is no list of ‘approved’ shoulder titles and in any case there were many instances of non-regulation insignia being worn. The number of examples required in this example would also mean that the title would most likely be a locally made private commission rather than an official RAF stores item. Therefore, whilst it is theoretically possible that one or more RAF personnel wore “Switzerland” shoulder titles, it is impossible to prove either way without specific photographic or documentary evidence. I hope that I have been able to assist you with your research.
Yours sincerely,
